5 Tips On Getting Scholarships For College

2 min

Scholarships are a great way to help make getting your college education more affordable. There are thousands of scholarships available every year for people of all ages and financial needs.

If you’re looking to go to college but need the help of a scholarship, keep reading to learn a few tips on how you can find a scholarship that will work to help you pay for your education:

SPEAK TO A GUIDENCE COUNSELOR
If you are in high school and looking to further your education after you graduate, high school counselors are great resources. They can help connect you to a number of college scholarship opportunities, both with your school of choice and from individuals in the community.

If you aren’t in high school and are returning to further your education, try checking with your institution. Many colleges and universities give scholarships for community involvement, church affiliation, and minority status.

APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS THAT TAKE MORE WORK
You’ve likely seen local scholarships available to students who complete a certain amount of community service or for those who write a lengthy essay explaining why they need the scholarship.

We live in a world where people want to have time for themselves and would rather not use their time applying for something that will require a lot of time and effort from them. Your chances of winning the scholarship is increased because fewer people are applying.

NEVER TURN IN AN INCOMPLETE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
Just as it goes with job applications, the incomplete or irrelevant scholarship applications that cross the desks of those deciding who deserves it will likely be trashed. To avoid this, be sure that you stay on topic and fill out all of the required information. Write legibly if you’re asked for a hand-written note, and be sure to answer every question, even if it is optional.

BE PASSIONATE
Each of your scholarship applications will be different. A lot of them will ask for an explanation as to why you deserve the scholarship or what you would do with the scholarship and how it would impact your life.

Be passionate about your situation, and don’t be afraid to get personal. If you have an issue with your family’s finances, make that known. If you have a huge passion for what you will study, make that known too. Don’t be afraid to show your true colors.

APPLY ON TIME AND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Don’t wait until the last minute to apply for scholarships. To lock them down, apply early in the year as soon as the scholarship opens. Additionally, make sure you keep a note of when the scholarship application is do and follow through with completing it and turning it in on time. If you are asked to mail in your information, ask to receive a delivery confirmation. If you are emailing in your application, create a professional email address instead of using one that you use for your personal communications with friends and family.
